HAPPY TALK

“You got to have a dream.

If you don’t have a dream,

How you gonna have a dream come true?”

Recently, my wife Melissa and I went to see South Pacific. Oscar Hammerstein’s lyric resonated with me. How about you? In this case, the song is being sung by Bloody Mary, a sassy middle-aged Tonkinese vendor of grass skirts, whose dream is to convince a sailor named Joe Cable to marry her daughter Liat.  Her dream is obviously to get off the island with American citizenship and to lead a better life.

When something means more to you than anything else, you will make sacrifices. Don’t believe it?  Then how else do you describe first generation immigrants in America selflessly working two or three jobs so that their children can go to college and perhaps become doctors. Hollywood and Broadway are also filled with dreams where actors move there with hopes of making it big against all odds, but still filled with joy in their pursuit of a dream.  Most of my favorite bands are playing for peanuts in bars, but loving their passion none-the-less.

If you don’t have a dream, then how you gonna have a dream come true?  Living in Crescendo is all about passionately pursuing your dreams. What’s yours?
