Portraits of Life in the World’s Slums

Slums are the squalid and overcrowded urban streets or districts inhabited by very poor people. They are rife with crime, disease, malnourishment, and poor sanitation. Many lack fresh water and electricity. Most have open sewers and garbage rotting in the alleys.

These pictures represent the lives of children and people of the slums from India and Asia, to Africa and South America. But you can see their living conditions don’t keep them from smiling once in awhile. It’s a testament to the human spirit and the will to survive. Sometimes images speak louder than words.
