Carnival Rio de Janeiro

February 5-9 is the biggest party in the world, just before Ash Wednesday

In a few weeks, Rio de Janeiro will host the biggest party in the world. The Carnival in Rio de Janeiro is held before Lent every year and considered the largest carnival in the world with two million people per day partying on the streets. In addition to the Sambadrome competitions, there are over 500 major block parties.  All revelers party their brains out for five days of debauchery before resolutely ending on Ash Wednesday.

The first festivals of Rio date back to 1723. The typical Rio carnival parade is filled with revelers, floats and adornments from the over 200 samba schools which are located in Rio. The top ten samba schools perform before the fortunate, as each school parade along the Sambadrome includes upwards of 2500 percussionists and 5000 dancers and dozens of multi-story-high floats. It is an unparalleled spectacle.

After a trip to Rio in 1986 and many subsequent travels to the area, I was compelled to write a fictional thriller about what a street kid would do to protect his little sisters amidst the 2008 onset of Olympic development turmoil. Renegade Pawn is the first book of my thriller series and begins the tale of sixteen year-old orphan, Lucas Rocha, who watches helplessly as a death squad executes his older brother and he becomes the sole caregiver for his twin six year-old sisters. Should he beg, steal or sell drugs to survive? There is no right in a world of wrong. Sometimes good people do bad things for a greater good.

Following the words of his dying mother “Sometimes good people do bad things for a greater good,” Lucas Yet looks to the heavens from the squalor below, a stargazer who fervently believes his dwindling family will someday live a better life, and he’s hell-bent to see it through.
