“NEVER BE THE SAME’”
RIO
ACT TWO–SCENE FIVE
“NEVER BE THE SAME”
As“Cruisin’”music continues, , John is observing all the people on Copacabana Beach.
John Hawthorne Roberto, you are one cool dude. (obvious exaggeration.)
Roberto Sanna (Pulling off his sun glasses, smiling)
I know. (Looking at his watch)
Oh no! I was supposed to clean the bathrooms
ten minutes ago. Senior Ribeiro will have my hide.
John Hawthorne Don’t worry. You can always moonlight as a tour guide.
Roberto Sanna scampers back into the hotel. John Hawthorne watches all the people
strolling on the beach and realizes that no one appeals to him like Helena.
In C
John Hawthorne I could wander all around the world,
searching far and wide to find another girl,
but it would never be, never be the same. (I could)
Walk away from those impassioned eyes,
but my empty heart would make me realize
that it would never be, never be the same.
(Segue) (I) tell myself that once again it’s time to run away.
But now I’ve finally met someone who makes me want to stay
(Chorus) and oh, there is no leavin love.
and oh, there is no leavin love….not for me.
Helena I could find myself another love,
just a simple man and that would be enough,
but it would never be, never be the same. (He is)
Not my kind, and I should let him go.
But I couldn’t live within my tortured soul, ‘cause
it would never be, never be the same.
(Segue) (I) tell myself that once again it’s time to run away
But now I’ve finally met someone who makes me want to stay
(Chorus) and oh, there is no leavin love.
And oh, there is no leavin’ love….not for me.
John Hawthorne I don’t need another challenge now.
Helena (duet) I can get along all by myself somehow,
but it would never be, never be the same. (I should)
Close my eyes, and make it go away.
If I’m not involved, then I would be OK,
but it would never be, never be the same.
(Segue) (I) tell myself that once again it’s time to run away.
But now I’ve finally met someone who makes me want to stay
(Chorus) and oh, there is no leavin love.
and oh, there is no leavin’ love….not for me.
Helena continues to work, gazing out from her reception stand at the airport. John Hawthorne walks back into the Rio Park Hotel. From behind a building, standing in an alleyway is the Enforcer and the Lieutenant, who observe Hawthorne walking into the hotel.
Lieutenant This is the man?
Enforcer Yes. I wouldn’t be wounded if he hadn’t interfered.
Lieutenant Let’s tell Tamanero. He won’t be interfering much longer….
